Twitter and Online Poker: A New PR Campaign Begins

November 19, 2009 (PAP Newswire) -- Continuing its efforts to achieve full legalization and regulation for Internet poker in the United States, the Poker Players Alliance (PPA) is kicking off an ambitious new campaign. "Tweet for Poker" seeks to take advantage of the huge popularity at Twitter to get the issue of online poker legalization greater exposure.

The new online poker-themed website is designed up to enable Twitter users to tweet pre-made messages that support the repeal of the 2006 Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA), which has effectively banned online poker from the U.S. Some lawmakers have introduced bills to repeal the UIGEA, but those are currently all stalled in the U.S. Congress.

“Twitter users who would like to participate enter information on the site and it redirects them to their Twitter account which will have a stock message ready to send to their lawmaker,” the popular political Internet hotspot The Hill describes the new site. “Visitors to the site can also follow others who are contacting their member of Congress from around the country.”

“A sample tweet is ‘Protect my right to play poker online. Support S1597 #poker.’”

"Poker players are online, they’re active, and they’re weighing in on the policy battles that impact their right to play," PPA Executive Director John Pappas said. "Tweet for poker is PPA’s most instant and dynamic tool for our members to directly contact their legislators in a way that engages the public in the debate."
