I would agree in that affiliates need to make one site succeed first and then apply their learnings to their other sites once they have implemented all these things on their main site. It's nice to have a lot of sites, but chances are that when you have a good site that ranks well inter-linking can help you achieve the SEO goals you set as much as other portals.
