In the poker affiliate market there is a great potential to exceed our life expectations in so many ways. To be successful in this industry you not only have to be a skilled entrepreneur, you have to excel in all areas of life. Whether it’s your work ethic, social skills or balancing the rest of your life you have to be strong in all facets. If you are weak in just one area of your life it can bring you down and have a negative impact on the other areas of your being. I don’t want to write an entire blog post on how you have to be a well rounded individual to succeed in this industry. What I would like to do though is talk about how getting too involved in the day to day slog of being a poker affiliate can narrow your vision and ultimately be the key ingredient of mediocrity.

Planning your day to day or even weekly tasks on your whiteboard or planner is simply not enough to make a mark in this industry. Sure, completing your daily content requirement is a must to survive, but at the end of the day that is all you will be doing. You need to have plans and goals in place for the next quarter, 6months, year and even 5 years. If you don’t have these in place it is just like driving at night without any lights. You are trying, but you can’t see where you’re going.

This all might sound a little bit Tony Robbins for a poker blog post but let me describe what I mean. Currently we are right in the middle of the WSOP Main Event.  I was talking to a number of affiliates about the time of event 9 or 10. What surprised me is that many affiliates didn’t even know that the WSOP had even started. They were so caught up in the grind of writing poker strategy and reviews that they didn’t even realize that the biggest event of the poker calendar year was in progress. This is the peak time for generating revenue for a large percentage of affiliates. Planning for this event should have started a long time ago if they were serious about making some cash from the publicity that this event provides for affiliates. You have to allow yourself to detach from the secluded world of your home office and take note of the big picture. Set yourself up with a step by step plan and you are well on your way to achieving big things.

If you haven’t already heard the news, Rafael Nadal has finally beaten Roger Federer on the grass courts at Wimbledon. If you don’t follow tennis that much, Roger Federer has won Wimbledon for the last 5 years in a row and was going for a record breaking 6th title. Nadal has been trying to beat Federer for a long time and in fact lost the last few finals to him. He simply couldn’t beat him, but every year he got closer. Last year when he played him it went to 5 sets and a lot of the commentators said he would be tough to beat again this year. They were correct; he knocked him off in a thrilling match which he won 9-7 in the 5th set. The moral of this story is that Nadal set himself up for victory.  He had a goal of winning Wimbledon, a tournament that he was notoriously weak in and he set about trying to rectify his poor form on the grass. He didn’t just rock up to training and start grinding away hitting tennis balls. He saw the big picture, put a plan in place and hit winners all the way to his success. If you aren’t already, you should be following his lead and be trying to knock the big boys of their pedestal as well.

How many of you have already started preparing for the upcoming WCOOP on PokerStars and the FTOPS on Full Tilt? If you haven’t already added these events to your poker news posts and started writing some killer strategy articles on how to take out the 6 Max Event #1 at the WCOOP then you should be. Events like these provide a great opportunity for affiliates to write specific content and rank for profitable terms associated with the promotion.  Have you started negotiating with poker rooms over getting exclusive deals for the 2009 Aussie Millions tournament? Have you started to plan how you are going to send players to next year’s WSOP in Las Vegas? Set yourself up for victory by thinking big, but not only that, start implementing the steps that are necessary to achieve this. Are you offering anything that 500 000 other sites don’t already? In this industry you need to set yourself apart from the competition or you will never be able to beat, or even compete with the super affiliates.

In this increasingly competitive poker affiliate industry it is easy to grind yourself into the ground with a heavy workload. While a good work ethic is a must, if you don’t work in a smart and concise way with clear action plans you will be swallowed up by mediocrity. Take some time to remove yourself out of this frame of mind and work out a way that you can be better than the rest. I’m sure most affiliates didn’t get into this industry to grind out an average salary. In fact, most affiliates probably got into this industry to break that cycle. Set yourself up for victory before you wake up one day and you’re still grinding 10 pieces on content a day and it’s almost time to retire.
