I doubt a US Google user is going to click on a .co.uk domain in preference to a .com, regardless of where they are in the SERPs. I can't remember ever seeing a .co.uk ranking higher than a .com on Google.com, but that's not to say it isn't impossible. For Google UK however, .co.uk is most certainly the way to go, and apparently it can help if the site is also physically hosted in the UK - I haven't verified this personally.
