Usually with a VPS you run your own nameservers (eg ns1.yourdomain.com) rather than using the hosts (eg ns1.bluehost.com). What you need to do is register the nameservers as I described so that they show up under nameserver whois (see http://www.internic.net/whois.html) before you point to them in the domain whois.
