Default Alexa

How much can you trust alexa as a value of the traffic to your site. My site does relatively well in alexa considering its only been up for 4 months or so alexa rank 617,000. I have heard in other forums that alexa ranks can rise and fall very quickly. A site with an alexa rank of 100,000-300,000 is this an accurate measure that the site does very well. I read a post once saying that a good measure of your sites performance is by looking at both the pr and alexa rank, if these to are both good you know your sites doing well. My site is currently a pr 0 but has an alexa rank of 617,000 surely when a site gets down to 400,000 in alexa it is hard for it to have a pr 0 becuase with that amount of traffic coming to the site google should surely increase the PR. I understand PR is determined by an equation measuring lots of factors but just thought sites with very high traffic should recieve a high pr.

Sorry I'm not directly replying to your question, but just wanted to mention that your main bulk of content on your sight is off-center (to the left) when I view it in IE7.

With the PR, you won't see any change in that except for every 3 months or so. Your actual PR is constantly changing, despite whether or not this is shown on the green PR bar.

Your pagerank and rank in alexa are completely indepent stats. Pagerank refers to the amount and quality of links pointing to your site and Alexa is based on how much traffic your site receives. A site can have a top 500 alexa rank with a no pagerank or a 5,000,000 alexa rank with a pagerank of 7.

Neither are very accurate ways to measure the success of a site, but you can get a general idea of where a site stands when combined with other metrics.

I am not experienced in all this so take it for what it's worth but as far as the reading I have done over at some of the other forums regarding this, the alexa ranking is not accurate and you should not be relying on this as an good resource to your site.

Same as PR. I have seen some god awful sites that are basically all of 3 pages with decent PR and others can't seem to get tehir feet off the ground.

Here is a thread you can read and maybe read a few more in this category so you can see quite a few opinons about it

I dont worry much about that or PR, my main concerns right now are content, keywords, backlinks and content

In regards to Alexa ranking, it can be useful to see if a site has "decent" traffic, but overall I have found it not to add much value. It can be easily manipulated both intentionally and non-intentionally.

For example when I started using Firefox on all my computers versus IE, I stopped using the Alexa toolbar. The Alexa ranking of PAW went up quite a bit, while the actual raw traffic to the site also increased. This was because I visit PAW probably more per day than anyone else. And now none of my visits are being monitored anymore by Alexa.

This just goes to show how easily it can be manipulated even by just one person who uses the Alexa toolbar.

I would say for the average webmaster, Alexa is nothing more than an "entertainment tool"

Alexa is useless. See here
http://info.alexa.com/data/details/t...erlistings.com

It shows Poker listings getting more traffic from sweden than the US... and then it shows below that that 7% of the traffic goes to master.pokerlistings.com... which is an employee password protected area. taken together, since those employees go to other pages on the site, and they are in Sweden, this means Alexa is counting the 70 pokerlistings employees as about 20% of the sites total traffic.

As a traffic counter Alexa is an easily manipulated joke.

For the other data, like country visitors, for sites not trying to manipulate the results by having all their employees install the toolbar, you can get a broad idea where international traffic comes from.

In general though, there are far better sites out there than Alexa that offer free traffic analysis.

You mean for your own site? Google analytics is the place to start.
