Default Mailing list question for those with both a forum AND newsletter

I am just starting to put a lot of work into building a forum and starting a newsletter. For those of you with both; do you keep separate mailing lists or combine the two?

For example, Flopturnriver.com has something that says "Newsletter and Forum - New members: Register". But PAP has both the forum and a newsletter opt-in form on the resource pages.

Are there pros and cons associated with each method, or is just a matter of preference?

I would have just made one email list and included everyone. If most of them is the same people, why do two seperate lists?

Or do you offer something special for your newsletter and not the forum?

This kinda goes along with my own questions. I notice that some people have a separate form in the blog area or front page for their opt-in newsletter. Then the forum provides another list of emails that can receive your emails.

It seems like using both would allow you to get the email addresses for those who like the content and want more, but don't want to participate in the forum.

I would assume, like you said, that you would have one list per site, but I was curious what others (like Jeremy) do.

I automatically add all forum members to my mailing list.
I also have an option to sign up for the newsletter on my home page for those who don't join my forum.

Any forum member who doesn't want to receive future copies of the newsletter can opt out.

I'm going with an HTML version of the newsletter in march which will be available on my site. I'm hoping this increases sign ups from non forum members.
