Hey Graham - congrats - I was an IBMer for 10 years until resigning in Dec '05... made a reasonably senior position (hey, its all relative), but in the end the vision of spending the rest of my life as their slave scared the sh*te out of me.
Actually left for different reasons - to travel the world and force myself to get a 'fresh perspective' and accidentally discovered poker in 06 and then the affiliate business during 07.
2 years later the very politics and psychology of the Big Blue that drove my success are far enough away to see things in sharp perspective.
I now pity those 'suits' who value their own importance relative to that of other people within their organisation. I see their managers throwing them just enough 'good dog' bones to keep their tails wagging away (I did exactly the same in both 1st and 2nd line manangement positions!).... I realise that they will wake up on the day of their retirement (barring a heart attack along the way!) and realise their life has been fundamentally meaningless...
10 fantastic and enjoyable years - travel, big-ticket projects and working with some really smart people on cutting-edge business transformation projects.... would I go back? Never!!
You just made the greatest decision of your life Graham - put in half of the work that IBM saw as 'average' and you'll be a huge success!
Cheers, Mark
