They are not, its just typically decent quality sites with good link popularity and content tend to be .coms.
You have no evidence to support you claims except that you dont see many of these domains. I have been a SEO for many years and have noticed little / no reference in how google treats your site depending on the domain, and if they do, its very minor.
Google is not rocket science, Good ranks are achieved by a) good site link popularity b) links with desired anchor tect c) matching onpage optimization to support a and b. Trust is being thrown in now but i dont think this has a huge affect on ranks at the moment. It is more for flagging potential spam sites for human review.
