lol! I came here to post about that very same e-mail I received.
Now.. if you're going to buy an e-mail database and use "fields" to populate your pretend-personalised e-mails, at least make sure your tables are populated correctly. I mean, if you want to spam, at least do it right.
So, to improve on your existing shaddy practices, I'd like to suggest adding the following line at the end of your e-mail in future sendings:
"Dear %Name% if you're seeing the string "%Name%" where it should say %Name%, could you please reply to this e-mail so we can update our records. This will ensure that our spam e-mails are actually adressed to you correct, MR or Mrs %Name%. We have to use "Mr or Mrs" because we don't have yet the technology to recognise your gender based on reading the name %Name%. Thank you for your collaboration in this matter, MR or Mrs %Name%"
