Default Setting up Poker Blog

I'm looking for the best way to add a poker blog to a current website. We just added a blog section to the task bar on the homepage and set it up as a simple WP blog. It has the same structure as the other pages on the website.

I was thinking that it would be best to have a completely different look to the rest of the site. So it looks like a separate blog, but linked to from the homepage. So it would have a different side navigation bar etc.

Is the current method we implemented ok or should we look at doing what I just mentioned?

Thanks guys,

Nick

Personally I think the current set up is best. I would get rid of the http://pokershark.com.au/category/blog/ and just go for http://pokershark.com.au/blog/ though if possible.

Wow my news section has the same link structure. I will have to change that. Thanks for pointing that out.

looks like you added the link to all pages on the task bar, still have to add on the profile page. I think it looks good.

I think it looks pretty good the way it fits in with the rest of the site. Maybe you could do a graphic or just big text below your top menu and the beginning of the blog content that says

PokerShark Blog

...or something just to add a differentiating factor besides changing the layout of the navigation or anything crazy like that. You just need to let the visitor know that they are in the blog section of a bigger portal without changing the feel.

To be honest - I'd have gone with a separate WP installation and run in another folder like pokershark.com/blog

Copy your them to the other installtion and mod it up to make it more customised to the blog.

To your reader it'll look the same but you'll be able to make changes without affecting your whole site.

As you have it now - you're running your blog as another category which means you'll need to use a theme switcher or a category dependant code to change up your themes.

Keep 'em seperate - will also allow you to sell one off without the other later if necessary

Bump... I'm leaning towards OzPoker on this one. But I think I can also do the same as what he is saying with the current design... as Back in Black says.

I want to have it like an actual blog, not a section of the website. But I want it to be part of the website. Which may not make any sense.

Anyone else have any idea, need to make a decision on this soon

I would go for a seperate wp installation using the same design. However, modify the header on the blog installation so that you have the standard logo with 'blog' after it. I think that should help you keep the general theme of the site whilst subtly reinforcing that this is a new sepearte area of the site.

Pretty simple idea, but I think it would do the trick.

A separate installation of wordpress is a good idea, but you would have to update both installs when new versions arrive, and change everything else twice.

That said, it looks like it would be the best option for what you want.
