1000's of New Top Level Domains?

Announcement that ICANN voted to implement the new system of top level domains... link above does not have many details

Should be interesting to see how the search engines handle this... we live in (increasingly) interesting times!

This is very interesting indeed, thanks Mark. I can only imagine all the new extensions that would be registered. I imagine over the years it would even further increase the value of the .com.

I was just chatting to someone the other day about how I wouldn't be surprised if there wasn't a big shake up of domains soon. The current system is very restrictive and penalises new companies too much (imagine the domains that would be left to buy in 25 years time).

But....what does this mean? You can register your own tld like .poker and keep it all to yourself? Or you can register a domain with any tld in the same way you can now but the tld options are endless? OR are they just removing the supposed restrictions on net's and orgs?

Don't really get this - anyone know what they're on about?

What does that mean exactly? Does that mean that people will be able to registers domains like www.poker.anythingtheywant

Yeah thats the way that I interpreted it as well. Will be interesting to get some more details on this and to see how it all works out. I can only see this being positive in the great scheme of things though.
