Check out Nat Arem's research on this. Some of the biggest sites are getting whacked.

This is unfortunate. I always cringe when I see a thread titled "weird things going on at google"

I have NEVER bought a link and one of my sites went from page 1 to page 5...now page 6.

So, who knows what is going on.

I was surprised it took this long for a post about this to be made. Hopefully whatever is going on at google is temporary. It seems strange that all these authority sites were penalized so heavily. I imagine the penalty could be for buying links, but who knows? Almost every big affiliate I know has bought a link at some point.

What sucks is that a few of these sites that got penalized deserve to be in top spots because they are authority sites.

Either way, it sucks for the guys that got hit. Hopefully it works itself out in Google in the next few weeks.

How does Google know if someone bought a link anyway??

Is this a picture of Mr. Google?

I imagine this is only if one is buying LOTS OF LINKS in bulk.

1 or 2 here and there is not going to affect anything, right?

For example..."Hey Graham, I will give you $20 to put up a link to my site somewhere within the text of your homepage."

That is not going to be "figured out" by Google is it?

Regardless...it is happening to sites NOT INVOLVED in any link buying...so that can't be the reason.

Maybe they are selling links.

You don't have to buy links to get a link penalty. You could sell them, you could spam other blogs, you could do three and four way link exchanges, you could make your own spamblog network, and most bluntly... you can link to people who do any of the above. Not linking to a bad neighborhood has been the one of the clear suggestions/instructions Google has had for at least five years.
