I totally have that habit John .. but if you can somehow magically get into the habit of using the ONE .txt for notes, and always using it, then it spends a lot of time open .
I also use a whiteboard, a great big one, and a little small one... and lots of purdy marker colors .
We won't discuss the cork board here today
HEY I just realized, I have the opensource word thing now.. whatever it's called.. I can probably open poker69's excel sheet now! Wonder where I saved that!

I've never quite got Google Docs.
Anyone got a good link that will give an overview of what it can do? I've tried playing around with it, but never quite got the hang of it although a lot of people I know swear by it ...

google docs rocks, it is worth taking the time to figure out how to use it at it's best.
Here are some of my tips and suggestions some come from being an engineer.
Clean work environment including desk.
Having a work environment that you actually like and is comfortable.
Since this is the PAP community I highly recommend having a poker table as a desk. The arm rests are comfortable, you have drink holders (mine has 10), and it looks pimp and gives me a bit of motivation.
Regarding pen and paper I have heard many times that you will remember something more if you physically write it down, more than typing. I always have a notebook with me, this one is around 7" by 4" and I am always writing down my thoughts and ideas.
In terms of CRM which I think everyone in this industry could have / should have, I am using sugarCRM which gives you the ability to customize your CRM exactly how you need it. Best of all sugarcrm.com is free.

I just never get all the G (google) support. Yes they dominate in alot and have cool tools but we are giving them way to much information for free. All the information we push thru the G programs is open for them to examine.
Just one Example:
when you use webmaster tools or G analytics if you have say 5 sites listed on one account you just screwed yourself out of ever cross linking these sites with any real value. You just told them that you control all 5 sites.
And for G docs, i have never really played with this but i find that the more and more G pushes free programs their is a reason for it.
So when i write notes for my total site design or long term linking seo project i really dont want that information to be out of my control ever or on the G Grid.
Just something to consider with managing your empire.

Really surprised nobody mentioned Evernote, www.evernote.com . I think it is a great product, The free version is very good, and they also have a paid version. I've been using version 2, but they now have a version 3 out that will sync with iphone.
Organize notes by categories, tags, keeps hyperlinks active to original source, integrates with outlook, explorer, etc.
I use the program every single day. Really good product IMO.

1. A digital voice recorder for those on-the-fly ideas, etc. I keep it by my bed, in the car, wherever I go. You never know when you may get an idea, remember something that needs to be done, etc.
2. XOBNI for Outlook. Hands down the best organization tool for email on the planet. You ARE using Outlook to manage email, right?
3. A white board. Enough said.
4. Salesforce.com - a great way to keep track of projects, your contacts (even it's just a bunch of affiliates and AM's). The personal edition is about 99 bucks a year and it's web based, so you even access it when attending shows around the world

I used to write everything on those little yellow sheet... but it made my 24' screen look like a 10' screen cause they were too many notes! hehe!
Now, I use Outlook and I really like it.
1. I wrote my note there in the calendar; if there is something I need to get back to, i just write a date/hours and set a reminder.
2. I use some color code in my outlook calender: blue = done; yellow = look a it when you will have time (2011?); orange = hey! look at it... now!; red = omg, you're late again idiot!!!
3. I do use flags to set some reminders about some important emails.
Regarding data storage, well... i suck at that part! This is something I need to organise better... I'm on it.....
