Default Exposure Versus Engagement

I read a post at Aaron Wall's SEO blog today where he discussed the difference between exposure and engagement. The point that he makes is that it's more profitable in the long term to have a deeper, more passionate community engaged in your site than it is to have a shallower, less committed community who see your site but aren't "engaged".

And last night, I was talking with another webmaster who I respect a great deal about his attempts to reduce his bounce rate.

Usually when I start getting multiple "messages from the universe" like this, I try to take a hint. I'm good at getting a lot of traffic, but I'm not sure that I always engage my traffic as well as I might.

Does anyone have thoughts about this?

Man, it's funny to read your post because I try everyday to engage my audience as well as you do on your pages, I think you have a real knack for writing informative content that isn't boring - harder to do than most realize.

Probably more to do with me not being a "trained" writer, but still.

related to the other thread you started...as you start to engage folks, you should see your bounce rate drop.

But we don't want that. Poker affiliates ideally want a HUGE bounce rate -- but one that is profitable... meaning people bounce to Pokerstars or Everest, not to their Yahoo mail or Google.

Internet marketing articles about bounce rate don't take into account how different poker marketing (and to a lesser extent other affiliate marketing). With poker, you want people to come back again and again, and bounce again and again.

It really is a much more complex activity universe to try and manipulate.

Yeah, I mean if you think about it you'd much rather have a high bounce rate with people going to poker rooms, instead of a low bounce rate where people sign up and post at your forum. The object here is to make more money, not to lower your bounce rate.

Converting pages should have a high bounce rate, e.g. a bonus code page and content pages, such as blogs, strategies, etc. would preferably have a low bounce rate.

As the homepage usually has most traffic, it would be best to find a mix in between.

I have never really thought about this, but I have become curious what the different type of my pages do... up to my Analytics account now
