Default Your Portfolio

How is your portfolio of sites split based quality and uniqueness?

A. Authority site with huge amounts of repeat traffic, content, unique features etc
B. Site with 20-200 pages of content, but very few, or no unique features
C. Site with mainly reviews and bonus codes and up to 20 pages of general content
D. Site with reviews and bonus codes and virtually nothing else apart from maybe a small handful of other pages

My personal split (for poker related sites) I would say is currently:
A: 3 sites
B: 2 sites
C: 8 sites
D: 1 site

I think my general aim is to get them all up to the quality of at least level B.

Great idea for a post. I have about 800 domains and 200 sites, almost all of which are only 2-20 pages. For all of those sites, I've done almost no linkbuilding, but some of them are also abandoned projects from years ago, when I had no idea what I was doing. I have maybe 20 sites I care about, almost all of which are on different subjects and have different focuses. My top 5-10 sites make almost all of my money.

I'd be interested to know how much uniqueness you keep with your trackers for various sites? Or, to re-word the question, Do you have unique trackers on every one of those main 20? (I am assuming not on the 200!)

I've always done a pretty poor job of tracking from site to site, but not all of my 20 sites are in this industry, either. I have different sponsors on my non-industry (non-poker, non-gambling) sites. But my main sponsors are tracked separately on my top 5 sites now.

This is definitely something I'm working on improving in 2009. I've hired help to take care of some of that for me, since I'm not good at it.

Randy,

For some reason I cant comment on the blog, so here could be ok to post. You have this blog post about long tail.
My question was do you know how your long tail conversion rate compares with you main keyword queries conversion rate?
Given what you just said, maybe you do not know.
My point is many ppl talk about these long tails, but in poker I am not clear if they convert at all, do they??

I don't really have a way to track which phrases bring conversions, but I've seen studies that claim the conversion rates go way up when the search phrase contains four or more words. But these things are so individualistic. It's obvious that "play no download poker online now" is probably going to convert better than "how to play pocket aces preflop in late position in no limit holdem", even though the latter phrase has more words.

My point with the post was that lots of content means lots of potential to be found for lots of longtail phrases, without the conscious decision to write pages specifically for those longtail phrases. 1000 pages with 1000 words on each of them is a total of 1 million words. A website with 1 million words is just naturally going to receive more longtail traffic than a site with 100,000 words.

I wouldn't say I manage 200 sites. I have 180 sites that just sit there, and 20 sites that I sorta manage. I only have 5 or 10 sites that I'm actively working on at any given time.
