I was contacted via IM a few times by someone who claimed that ethomps had given him my instant messenger address and that I could help him out. He claimed to be a member here, and he was using a domain name as his messenger handle. He wanted me to send him money via my Party Poker account in exchange for sending me some money via Paypal, and he was going to send me something like $60 for every $50 I would send him.

I politely told him no several times, then finally told him to stop asking me. (The guy wouldn't quit.) He then proceeded to cuss me out, and I blocked him on instant messenger.

I contacted ethomps about this, and it turns out that he didn't know the guy either, and the guy had contacted him pretending to know ME.

There are a couple of morals to this story:

1- Don't give out other people's messenger addresses without asking them first.

2- Don't send money to strangers who contact you via instant messenger.

Most of us have sense enough to stay out of this situation to begin with, but I did want to let everyone know that there is some kind of bottom feeding scam artist who's contacted at least 2 of us, and I'd hate for him to contact other members of this forum without having warned them.

I too have been scammed, probably by a different person as different events occurred. I won't publicly announce the name unless I am told do so. I contacted someone via IM and did a service for him. Sadly I was never paid.

I'd be glad to do so, but I would need Randy or Jeremy's permission.
