I want to learn how to create my own website, should I take a class to learn HTML?

What do you guys recommend?

I have heard a couple people say, "check out the SEO forums". I personally would like to take an online class to learn the basics first.

What J.C. class do you recommend I take for learning how to create the best poker website in the world, or atleast a really good one?

I have asked this question before and it seems to have fallen on deaf ears. I would appreciate any help at all. I really want to get this thing going and I can't do it without your help.

Get a good WYSISYG software program and learn CSS / HTML basics to get you started.

Also, try using a pre-built template instead of starting from stratch. IMO

Thanks for the response. I was thinking about taking an HTML class. Is that the best way to go?

Only if it's free or really inexpensive.

Otherwise, find some kid who can teach you.

HTML isn't difficult to learn, especially since you'll want to use a WYSIWYG html editor so you can save time (and it's a lot easier).

Im sure almost all colleges have computer design courses. You can probably take a good class at a local college

A starter class wouldn't be a bad idea to help speed your way thru the basics.
You'll have a real human to get instant answers & feedback from too.

I wouldn't suggest a course that really pushes Microsoft & Frontpage though.
They've all been paid off by MS to push their software, most elementary & high schools have been too.

I think the template suggestion was a good one also, instead of starting from scratch.

good luck,
Greg

If you want to learn HTML, avoid templates. You wouldn't be really learning html, but rather how to work with a specific template.

I'd go for a junior college or adult ed class. You want someone to answer your questions, and maybe more important, the questions of other newbies since there is no way you will think of all the good questions on your own.

My advise is to start brainstorming your site concept, do your keyword research and then start writing your content NOW.

With WYSIWYG html editors and templates learning to build a good looking website is by far the easiest part of this business.

1. Finding a poker related niche with little competition.

2. Finding keywords within your niche that get a descent amount of searches each month.

3. Writing pages of content that are search engine optimized for those keywords that have a reasonable shot of getting into the top 10, or at least the top 20 in Google, Yahoo and MSN.

This should be taking up 90% of your time and effort.

This is how you get traffic.

Without targeted traffic the best looking, coolest poker website in the world will not make you any money.

Not one single penny.

I think a lot of newbies just don't have a clue how competitive this industry has become and how difficult it is to get any traffic to a poker site these days.

Thanks everybody for your responses. I can't wait to get this thing started. I'm starting from scratch so I have a ways to go. I've used the offline game for awhile but I really want to incorporate a website into my business.

Remember...your quest is to create one of the best sites. That will not happen overnight. There are so many elements that contribute to a great website. Don't expect to be an exceptional webmaster in the next few months. To be 'one of the best' you are going to have to make it a top priority and really make it a true goal set aside many hours a day. Otherwise it simply won't happen.
