If Phpbb is free why pay?

I finally think my website has enought traffic to warrant it's very own forum.

I've looked around and the general suggestion is phpbb, which looking at the homepage appears to be free to download and use (if I'm wrong than there isn't much point to this thread).

But then most other forums are charged, e.g. vbulletin is $85 for a year.

So why pay for a forum when you can get a perfectly good forum for free.
What are the advantages?

phpbb is the easiest to hack, so worst protection

vb is nicer and with plenty of features

phpBB is hacked only when you don't update.

fwiw, the authors say they've never had an updated version hacked.

VB is the daddy, don't even look twice at anything else.

Everyone who has a clue about forums will know that VB is the ONLY way to go.

I've ran phpbb forums for years and never, ever had any issues with hackers.

Bottom line is that if someone REALLY wants to hack your site, they will.

www.supraforums.com is a prime example, they are Vbulletin and they've been hacked many times over the years.

If and when Brett Tabke ever releases the forum software that's powering WebmasterWorld, then that would be THE software to go with. He suggests using phpbb and recoding it to make it simpler, but that would be so far beyond anything I'm capable of doing that it's not even funny. Most days it's all I can do to figure out how to post a reply.

VB is with no doubt one of the best forums, there are others out there though that are better suited for certain objectives.

For a large forum with all the bells & whistles, you can't beat VB

but since you own one of the most successful forums on the web nickor, would you suggest I scrap my forum that is phpbb and start a new one with VB - I would really like to hear your opinion here.
