Advertising: Hit Or Miss

Advertising; sometimes you hate it and sometimes you love it madly. This month I had an advertising budget somewhere near about a quarter of my profits. For the most part this month I got no new leads or returns on my advertisements. But, in my eternal quest for new advertisers I stumbled upon a gold mine. Literally, what SEO experts refer to as "Undiscovered Gold". People who are selling advertising and have absolutely no clue what its worth. From my relatively small investment in this new company I'm expecting to quadrouple business. Of course, this is all in theory. But, its one of those theories I have a good amount of research and development to assure me.

Although I cannot tell you about this insanely awesome new advertising form I found. I can tell you about the ones that didn't help me at all:

*Adbrite: Adbrite is the most oversaturated PartyPoker Bonus Code, FREE IPOD, etc. etc. loving PPC advertiser out there. Although it seems like a winner, it actually bites - HARD! By my rating there is NO or little room for new players on this tool. BTW: Buy ADBRITE on my site

*Overture UK: Minimal success, the marginal cost to marginal benefits was equal or less.

*Text links on places like pokerlistings.com ; Bad idea - everyone already has an account on partypoker there.

Those 3 plus a few others were my failed attempts for the month. But, you know what they say, "If at first you don't succeed...." It was well worth my failed attempt at those places to find this place though. Unfortunately, the returns aren't always like this - but, thats advertising for you.

My 2 misses for the month

1) 5 million emails purchased from www.spamfreeadvertising.com I got 0 signups until I emailed bitching about the no response. Coincidentally, I got 2 play money signups that night. Total ripoff, I doubt any mail was actually sent.

2) 200 direct mail packages sent to fraternities. Packages included a letter and 3 flyers each. Return = 1 play money signup

Well my theory has officially been proved. My traffic has nearly doubled this month and I am overwhelmed by the results. RMP's is also on track to double for me this month. I hope you guys find the advertising mecca your looking for

Nicely done Eqthareal! It's always nice to see some advertising pay off. We dropped a very large amount of money on some classified ads in the newspaper for our poker dealer training course (dealer-training.com) and we didn't get shit for traffic. It was our fault, we didn't narrow our target market and our site was just a sales letter at the time.

Anyway, I think we've stumbled on to a very lucrative advertising spot just 2 days ago ourselves... This isn't for our main site, but on a different project we are working on that is another niche in the poker world.

Anyway, I just checked my traffic today and we have gotten nearly double the targeted traffic that we have been looking for through our google and overture programs, we're hopeful that it will pay off with continued sales. As other e-book sellers they are so schweet when you sell one because it is automatic, just check the old bank account and the $$ is there.

You guys let me know what you think of the dealer training site.

Oh, also we just got in our new business cards to promote our website and our local poker tournaments. Thanks to some of the advice from you guys here in the forum we created some more marketing materials for offline promo. I'll try to get a picture of it up soon, but on one side it promotes the 'Atlanta Poker Club' and on the other it is a partypoker promo with bonus code "BRAVESFAN" I just put about 45 out yesterday (had like 20 minutes) but we're hopeful to get all 1k cards out by 2 weeks and have more on order. I think the cards look good enough that most people will keep them.
