Just wondering what everyone thinks of affiliating for a living?

I am being very serious as my job assignment is likely to change for the worse come the fall...and I am seriously considering the idea.

It is not as shaky as playing poker for a living, but, is it worth quitting a career forever or temporarily in favour of affiliating?

Would love some input from affiliates who are doing this, especially those who have been doing this for about a year now.

I definitely have a nice paying full time job, which I would only quit if my affiliate income passes it by 25%. I do spend 2-4 hours a day on sites, links, research, etc... I consider the work I do more than just part time. I don't treat the affiliate world as a hobby. One day I hope to do this fulltime, but for now the money isn't being spent.

Eventhough you need to treat this business like a full time job, you still need to be careful to have that steady stream of income (JOB). Knowing I have that makes the money from my sites that much greater.

Of course you could go balls out and try your hardest to make it work as a fulltime job. I'm sure some of the people here could tell you what you need to make it work. If your married, have a house, kids, then you really need to think hard. If you have some ghetto job that has no room for advancement, then it's a no brainer.

Good Luck

I love my full time job, However with this Its a little side cash but I have noticed that I am spending whatever I make for marketing.
So I made a promise to my self to put more effort into it this year.
I have teamed up with some good people, Im educating my self and I am having my second web site built.

As I always said GOOD LUCK TO US ALL!!!

I'm just starting fulltime, spent the last 6-8 months fartin' around & collecting data for some "non-guessing" insight & direction.

I do it full time with poker playing - and if u can believe it I've lost 3 dimes in the last week with AK alone - everytime losing to A with a worse kicker nailing their two pair on the river.

Its like the poker gods are saying "No more poker for u". Too bad Im 21 and I don't want to work for anyone but myself or I'd have more steady income than the daily rounding I do.

100% here. I just love the freedom. I usually work a few hours 1 or 2 days of the week.

It's interesting for me, I've always had a "full time" job that provided the security and predictability for my family to live on. I've also always had additional income streams to allow us to live a good life on the weekends, etc.

Something interesting happened last week though that really put it in perspective for me. I turned down an offer at my job that would have nearly bumped my yearly income 2X. That's right, 2X what I make now.

Now what DROVE that decision was three things:

1. I'd have to move from Atlanta to Reston, VA. For me to make a lateral move as far as homes go I'd have to pay just north of $1,000,000.00. My home here in Atlanta has four bedrooms, two bonus rooms, formal this and that, full basement, three car garage, etc. It's not a mansion but it's a nice home on a cul de sac and I love living there. Reston is very expensive and that was a concern.

2. The stress level for me would have skyrocketed. I'm in sales now but the position offered was a very high profile sales gig working with clients that generate about 15M in revenue a year for our company.

3. I'm at a point with my affiliate programs where I'm now making about 40% of my "normal" yearly income from my affiliate sites. With that income now closing the gap and the increased cost of living in Reston, my decision was made easier.

In summary, I've now realized that while I may not get rich and live the easy life while my websites make me money, I do live a great life. It's partly because I've spent three years working on my network of sites (I do more than just poker) and I'm just now really realizing the benefits.

So I guess to answer your question I'm close to the 50% mark. I put in about 10-12 hours a week but that's about to ease 'cause I'm hiring someone to do alot of the admin work for my sites.

I was able to move to full-time poker affiliate about 3 months ago and I'm loving it. To me, it's the best "job" in the world and I'm truly grateful for the opportunity.

I've been 'affiliating' full time in one thing or another since mide '99. Not sure I could go back to working for someone else! LOL

Its about quality of life I agree. For the most part you can't get rich affiliating unless there are some really special circumstances. Its just a quality life issue at the end of the day.

What I like to do is travel. I get to do that as much as I want within economic boundaries of course and still make money while I'm not home. I can also concentrate on the stock market all day long and work a little bit on my sites, once they are established that is. Establishing your online business though is something that is not easy and that takes time and hard work.

To work a few hours per week from your home and make nearly the same as if you had to drive somewhere and wait in traffic there and back is an easy decision for me. However, insurance, and other benefits are things you have to be disciplined in covering yourself. These can be drawbacks, not to mention your income being left in the hands of Google's regular pagerank updates and serp reorganizations can you leave you high and dry.
