That has to be a very slim chance...to be honest. I have seen more posts of people who have done alot more redirects and never had a problem with it. Would it not be better to have a site that is properly named.
Yes it should be done from the start but the long term results of having it done whether from the get go or in the future should be the same ultimatly. I have done redirects on 30 pages and did not see an issue. They took effect immediatly and google picked it up. I needed to do this because my pages used the _ instead of the - It took about a week before things went back to normal. Now I need to properly categorize them

Long term this is a beneficial move if you have figured out proper subfolders. |

i'd add that the folders shouldn't be overly optimized; not so much for being "spammy" by the off-chance you'd have long directory names in an effort to "hit all possible keywords," but more so to encourage usability. try to keep them short and to the point... your semantics (title, headings and content) will support the identity more so than just your "naming convention" for directories. anyway, as stated before, you won't have any problems. if you were doing temporary redirects (302s), i'd suggest leaving both URLs in place, but you're doing 301s so everything will be fine. i, and a "nth" number of other geeks, have used 301s many times without any issues. just make sure you update the links you have on YOUR site to reference the new URLs, as that's the only problem i can foresee from a holistic aspect. building on that, if you have any IBLs (inbound links) to your pages, at least from sites you deem quality, then ask those site admins to please update their links as well. doing so may also start conversation between you two and create the opportunity for increasing links and a content partnership per se... a good thing, no? bottom line... 301s are your friend and with the number you're talking about, i'd think, would actually have already been done by the time i post this. otherwise, you're looking at what, 30 minutes of copy/paste and reindexing your URLs to check for errors? it's the tedious moments that feel like eternities. i suggest downloading and using xenu link sleuth from http://home.snafu.de/tilman/xenulink.html to check your links afterwards. |
