We have a thread brainstorming marketing ideas, and it's a great thread. But on the internet, you may have heard the expression, "Content is king." Content's important because it gives web visitors a reason to come to your site, and equally as important, it gives them a reason to bookmark and come back to your site. Content also gives other sites (including directories) a reason to link to you. A site full of banner ads isn't going to make a lot of money in the long run compared to a site with a lot of content and return visitors.
I'll start with a few ideas for creating content: 1- You could create a comprehensive directory for a poker niche. I've created (but desperately need to update) a directory of poker forums and blogs at http://www.pokerbabble.com/. You'll notice that I didn't require a reciprocal link to add someone's site to the directory there. 2- You could create and run a news blog about poker. There are lots of poker blogs out there, but most of them are of a personal nature. Matt Drudge of the Drudge Report offers what is basically a news blog, and he makes over a million a year in ad revenue from that site. 3- You could create and run a forum targeting a specific niche. This site is a perfect example of that. There are several forums that target casino affiliate marketing, but this is the only one I know of specifically targeting poker affiliates. 4- You could run a site that reviews online poker rooms, offline poker rooms, poker books, poker instructional videos. Just be sure that there's something of value in the review. A list of features and bonus information that's available directly from the online poker room doesn't qualify as a real review, because it doesn't add any value for your vistiors. I'd like to see some other people brainstorm content ideas in this thread. There are smart people here, and if the smart people here create valuable content in order to make the internet a better place for poker players, then those smart people will make a lot of money. |

I'd add the concept of interviewing personalities within the industry. These include:

I think adding content on your site is key. In the next few weeks you will see a great example of this right here on PartyRiches (I promise it's almost done) Good things come to those who wait!
One example I always like to point out of a site that constantly drives return traffic is my buddy Micon's. He runs www.NeverWinPoker.com If you can emulate this same type of principal with one of your site's, you WILL be successful. He simply puts a new story or NWP news aricle up every day or so. Micon is a pretty funny guy so many of his articles are hilarious instead of a ton of articles about poker theory, ect. I know this is why I continue to visit NWP every day. It's really not that difficult to create new content, and once your site gets rolling if you have forums, the content creates itself. Take a look at his site though and you'll see a great model of how unique content keeps people coming back. |

The thing I have seen, and profited from, is many webmasters don't have the confidence in their writing ability. The thing to remember is that your content does not have to be 100% grammaticaly correct, as long as it is useful to your visitor. The only way to get better at writing content is to write it. It will get better with practice.
As for ideas, I always look first at my own experiences playing poker. If that fails I flip thru a few of the many poker books I have or grab a CardPlayer magazine and look at the titles for ideas. |

I've taken a stab at viral marketing with www.mypokerbot.com
It's a "real" online pokerbots blog with semi-daily updates. I'm in the process of "transforming" the blog into a website that will hopefully turn "Wally" into a web celeb B) The blog is getting some decent traffic, it's got to be from people sending the link cause my search engine placement sucks right now. Think outside the norm, it works. |

That said, it is very easy to be 90%+ grammatically correct, even for mere mortals :P, and I think obvious mistakes do detract from the credibility of the author. Sklansky has a horrible writing style, but it follows the rules of English, and is useful. For example: Quote:
No matter how good your content, there comes a point where it is hamstrung by poor copy-editing. Write your content in MS Word (or any other word processor with a spelling and grammar checker). Use the checker and pay attention to what it says. Style is something that comes with practise (and a bit of natural ability), grammar and spelling can be faked. If you're really a boring writer, it is well worth finding someone who is willing to go over it with you. Your local university has a lot of fairly talented non-fiction writers. They're called A students - anyone who scores highly on essays in history, politics, and that sort of department almost certainly has a good writing style. Or just outsource the writing to the college students, the ones who aren't making 100K a year playing online poker are usually pretty good at turning a bit of reading into the ability to pretend they have knowledge on a subject and very glad to get paid for writing. Outsourcing content frees you up to do what you're good at.

"Grammar Checker?"
as in, it checks your punctuation, sentence/paragraph structure etc.? Thats my downfall, was always pretty good at spelling. I use Star Office & am just checking, to see if there is such an animal? ![]() That would be a godsend lol |
