This is just a general question, and would like to know if this kind of idea is worth it for seo purposes in the long run...
Say I have a page named 'poker-strategy.html' that is currently indexed in Google. However, this page mainly contains Stud strategy and I would like to rank better for a term like 'stud poker strategy' in Google and do some SEO around that. Would it be in my best interest to change this page from 'poker-strategy.html' to 'stud-poker-strategy.html' and upload that new page and then work on getting links to that page from then on? There would also be a redirect from the original 'poker-strategy.html' page to the new one. Would this be more beneficial in the long run?

I did this recently on a couple of pages as a test - it worked better than I expected, although it took about 3-4 weeks for google to pass all the PR from the old pages to the new in the SERPS. On the toolbar the PR is still greyed but I expect that will have to wait until the next PR update.
Well worth it I reckon. (you prob already realise this but for anyone else reading this thread - make sure you do a 301 redirect) |

i couldn't see the code you said you put in (in this thread) but i would leave the page as-is... or better yet change it to a directory, eg: /poker-strategy/
then repurpose the content/semantics to be less stud specific and create a new page in the newly created /poker-strategy/ directory named any of the following: stud.html stud-strategy.html stud-poker-strategy.html ** or whatever file extension you use. on the new stud page E--X--P--A--N--D on the previous (now current) level of stud-specific content so the content is now stronger than before. ** if it were me, i'd likely create a new directory instead of a web page for the stud content: /stud/ then, i'd use a blog/cms to add new content for the "stud category" in your "poker strategy" section so the directory uses variables for each entry (or go with a static/mod_rewrite solution for better urls if you want). each time you add a new stud strategy article/blog entry i'd rehash your main stud strategy page/index to work the new content into it... reason being you could consider your main stud strategy page/index a "master article/primer on the topic" or maybe a "living document" per se and in doing so, as you'd expect, the master document/content almost always works as a written table of contents for finer aspects of the topic. it's also constantly updated/changing to include new content and semantics so, if you're part of the "crowd that thinks content being updated regularly = great seo" you'll have that benefit as well. hope that helps |
