I've found this page quite useful:

It's only a free version (I think there is a more in-depth tool that you can pay for), but basically it gives you some idea of how well optimised your pages are, and provides a few suggestions for ways to improve them.

I found this very useful too. Maybe I am a dummy when it comes to SEO, but I found some very basic mistakes through this tool. I changed them and my rating by this tool went from very low to excellent. I hope that my Google results will improve at the same rate...

I like using Yahoo SiteExplorer to check competitors backlinks. Together with the following firefox extensions you can check the anchor text used and the pagerank of the page, in Google webmaster Tools and Yahoo Site Explorer.

SEO Link analysis

Besides these I also use the RankChecker extension to monitor my rankings. To check your backlinks you can also use the Harvester Tool which filters unique linking domains

I have used the SEO doc tool extensively and it was a big help. They have the advanced tool available on a subscription basis, but I would rather spend some money on a software I can buy and use long-term, since I have some more websites to work on. Any suggestions on whats the best purchase software to check websites for SEO?

I've used a lot of stuff but IBP is my weapon of choice. It's a little pricey but you get what you pay for and when you look at the amount of money you can make on the web it's a drop in the bucket really. I've made huge gains since getting this and I'm just getting started. They are also very approachable and I've exchanged several emails with the CEO in Germany who is eager to improve it even further and has taken many of my suggestions. I checked IBP and my first impression is I am very impressed indeed. Most detailed SEO and links report I have ever seen. It is expensive though.

Yeah well it's an investment and a couple of affiliate signups will pay for the thing really. You get what you pay for and with this you definitely do. A lot of SEO pros use this and if you want to play with the big boys you need the big toys
