Default Information Architecture and Filing Cabinets

Some newer webmasters have trouble setting up the information architecture for their website. SEOMOZ has a great blog post I came across today that compares a website's information architecture to a filing cabinet system. Thought it might be handy for some of the newer folks here to read.

nice post but it leaves out the element of interlinking your deeper pages.

For example if one of your navigation paths was;

homepage-->omaha strategy guide, with about 10-15 strategy articles linked from the strategy guide.

I try to link together some of the related strategy articles on that third tier of navigation, and also try to add links to bring users and bots back to the omaha strategy guide. (other than the site-wide navigation bar)

I had thought this was a good idea, but I am still making adjustments to the way the third tier pages are linked together on my site.

Any thoughts on this?

I do the same thing, try to interlink pages in the same folders, and also link back to the next highest folder - it seems to work well for indexing purposes.

Great reading but as explained already, it is missing deep linking points

Wordpress has a plugin called the Breadcrumb navigation, where it does exactly what you are talking about. If you are on a pot limit omaha strategy article, it will show the trail of pages that it is listed under. For instance, if you have a page called "pot limit omaha tips" it might be located in: site > strategy > plo > pot limit omaha tips. The breadcrumb navigation will link back to all parent pages.

I have pretty much been trying to replicate this sort of thing with text links at the top of the main text body. They don't show the a path like a breadcrumb, but I think it's about the same concept for SEO

Mark,

Do you know of any scripts that could do this for an HTML site?
