Google scans the anchor text for both ingoing links and outgoing links. If you are trying to rank for "online poker" I would link out to the Wikipedia entry with "online poker" for the anchor text. It seems like common sense. Google looks at the sites you link to in order to understand what your site is about. I do it anyways, I think it helps a little bit. --Sebastien EDIT: Do you have a tip ?

You're not going to actively shoot yourself in the foot, but at the same time you are giving Google a reason to value your content more. In faireness though, I am quite far from being SEO guru, so take my opinions with a large grain of salt.

Sebastien advice makes sense to me, although the points i make below are not necessarily SEO focused

Identify long search keyword terms. Using googles insite and webmaster keyword suggestions tools combined to search for longer keywords terms, include these in your meta data and manage your content to optimize for these terms. Discovering longer term search terms may be easier to rank for than highly competitive single keywords.

From Jeremy E's blog I believe; Outgoing clickthrough rates do matter.
Dunno if he said this as well, but I know I have heard Matt Cutts say it; when a user clicks through a link to another site, google will see them on the other side, they will see where that user came from, and they will follow that user's path backwards to the site they came from. |
