Default Which is more likely to be true?

You have a page with 101 outbound links on it. All of the links point to high quality sites, and you didn't use nofollow on any of the links. Which of the following is more likely to be true?
  1. The page will be penalized or banned by Google.
  2. The page will rank very high in Google.
Discuss the reasons why you picked your answer.

If the links are quality then the page is a good resource for visitors, no matter how many links there are on the page. The page will certainly not be penalized or banned by Google. This might be true if some of the links on the page are sold and not nofollowed. Whether or not the page will rank high would not depend only on the content, but on many more factors.

I didn't vote for either choice. I thought about it for a while actually, but there are too many variables. At the core of the argument...most pages with 100 outgoing links will tend to be low quality and should be dropped from serps anyway, but there are some directories our there that are high quality, and extremely useful (maybe not for poker so much).

For some people doing research, a really good directory is like a jackpot for information, and I'm sure this shows in click through rates and other stats like that. I'd expect metrics like click through rates, time on page etc. to be used in determining the importance of a directory before someone manually drops it from the serps.

As I said...some of these are extremely useful for some people (directories), so I'm sure that the ranking of these pages will be an ongoing issue at google. I think that If you can learn how to SEO a page with 100-150 links on it real well...you will have a bright future.

I think that the 100 guideline is just that and you've got to remember that there are guidelines and then there is what really happens and the two aren't necessarily even related. That example by Mark is some good evidence there and also shows how link text can function as content which is how the juice is being built up here.

100, 1000 or even 100000 links on a page has absolutely no bearing on a page's ability to rank.

Just my 2p worth

Well thanks for the 2p My 2p is similar, that this stuff can effect the quality of the links but it really doesn't have anything to do with YOUR page. I'm glad that you agree It doesn't really make sense actually how it could, but what happens is people read some guidelines or people's opinions or whatever and then just assume they should do it. That's not a real good way to stand out and beat the competition.;

Not enough information to base a realistic decision on, but given an 'average' scenario I would say it is more likely to be indifferent or beneficial as opposed to harmful to the ranking.
