Adding content is what you're after, changing it puts the whammy on you initially even with an established site
I have not seen this to be the case.

Well track your site and then change the title and description keyword mix and then check tomorrow and see yourself go down more than up. The old stuff is in the cache but for some reason Google doesn't like the mismatches. The KW's you change doesn't need to have anything to do with ones you go down on. I tweaked things twice within the last few days and took a hit both times. Now you might say sure this may be due to something else but I've seen it too many times, every time actually. Now in the end I'm moving things toward a certain KW and it's the right move but honestly change is as a rule met with a step back first.

Default How important is update frequency?

I am also very much aware about the importance of the update frequency. Since I know that I can hardly submit posts daily, I try to maintain a 2~3 posts weekly. I think this is enough to allow my posts being being indexed by Google to arrive at the top page (hopefully!) when someone search the right keyword.
I also need to have time promoting my posts before I make the next one. But I think the most important part is consistency, maintaining a fixed schedule.

Thanks!

The problem with me is that I never cared that much about the SEO aspect (and it shows in some projects) as much as I cared about my readers. I own several content sites and I feel bad when I cannot update them as frequently as I wished I could. I feel guilty towards my readers, more than I care about loss in traffic. Updating my content frequently on some projects did keep the traffic up and also my readers happy. Some link back to my articles or recommend the site as an active place to get information. Keeping content fresh makes you look "serious" and this does draw lots of advantages
