Another thing to point out is that when righting for the web it is only necessary to write on an eighth grade level because people don't want to read really heavy stuff online. For the most part, online readers are skimming and scanning text for what they are looking for.

This is terrible advice. Showing contempt for your readers by assuming that they want to read 8th grade level writing is a great way to turn off your audience.

I agree however there are going to be folks who prefer 8th grade "righting" and those who want to read a little higher level of "writing."

Sorry I couldn't resist that man

There's a balance here really between sounding like you know what you're talking about and having your material a little too recondite. I do need to pay attention to this but I'm not shooting for the 8th grade either. If you're only in the 8th grade you're too young to gamble and if you only made it that far well nothing against you but I don't necessarily want to appeal to the least common denominator either. I want to challenge my readers to think and if you don't want to then you shouldn't be reading instructional material I guess. I've never had anyone complain about the reading level on my site and while you don't want to have people needing to look things up in the dictionary, ideally you're sounding fairly intelligent if you're looking to impress people with your knowledge.

I'm worried though that The Poker Jerk is going to read this and particularly the advice about being direct and opinionated and that is going to inspire him even more
