Default where to put link exchange?

Hi, I see you can get nowhere withoout getting some strong links in. I have done a lot with building my links in, but I see more and more posts about link exchange.
What are the benefits and downswings for me when I do link exchange. I heard that google gives less value for a link if a Site A links to Site B and vice versa. So I assume 3 way linking is the best solution.
I am considering putting a additional modul for this exchanges under archive of the news - ARHIV NOVIC (lower right part)
Inside I woud put some banners or links for link exchanges with poker related sites, aiming mostly at Slovenian poker sites. Do you have any advice about it.
How does google rate directory for link at the bottom of the site (quite unseen to the users).

The best thing to do is to offer and request contextual link exchanges, which take words or phrases on your page and link them to other sites.

You know, I hear people say this to, but I've never seen any evidence to indicate that it's actually true. It's a major over-simplification of the "don't exchange excessive amounts of reciprocal links".

How much credit would you give a link that is put in a place where it's intentionally hidden from the users compared to a link that's front and center? Which one do you think is a more confident vote for the quality of the page that's being linked to?

I actually ran a test on this, and I didn't see a difference in the ranking effect of the links in the footer, but they did get indexed much later than the links in the sidebar. (Everything else was equal.) I think a safe assumption is that if something is important enough to get indexed sooner, it's probably important enough to rank higher.

I have payed to run some banners at a couple of popular Slo portals. Got quite poor results for my money, woud be better if I went for a short vacation.

Does google rate my site any credit for payed adds.
What do you think about payed adds vs. payed links ? What makes more effect/money.

Actually I've seen extensive tests of this and the results were that there is no difference. The problem here is that some people think Google penalizes you for reciprocal links and they do not. Whatever excessive is is pretty damn excessive indeed and there may not even be a limit here.

Banners are image files and they don't really get scored at all. They aren't the same thing as a text link.

No, it has no effect on SERPs or PR. The reason is that Google and other SE's don't want sites to be rewarded by banner ad links.
