Side menu in Java Script - Bad or Good?

All of my side menus and top menus on my page are in java script. Is this something that the search engines are capable of reading?

This might not necessarly be a bad thing if they can't read the menus, bcz it would keep them concentrated on the main text.

However, the only problem I might have with it is that my sitemap is also linked through these menus that are in js, so if the engines can't read the js, then how will they get to my sitemap page?

No, the search engines are not capable of reading js. True, it will focus them on your text but your other pages will not get indexed.

At the very least, put a text link for your sitemap at the bottom of your page. Also, include links to other pages in your text. IMO, those are the links that get clicked more often anyway and the SEs are capable of reading those.

Also, create a google sitemap and submit it to them, that has helped me get more pages indexed.

Links are one of the most important things regarding SEO. I wouldn't use java links at all. If you're going to have links anyway, why not have links that help you rank in the search engines?
