Default Number of one way links

I was wondering how many one way links you can add to your site per day/week without being penalized, that's if there is penalty for this.

It depends on what kind of links they are. If you're planning to spam blogs and forums, then it might be tough to stay under the radar. If you're planning to submit to some quality directories by hand, or even submit some articles, then you don't need to worry about a penalty. Just do your thing.

I think a lot of it has to do with the amount of links you already have and the amount of links that are coming in naturally. If you dont have any links yet and you buy 50 links with all the same anchor text, Google will know something is up.

You need to make sure your linking structure looks natural. Getting a mix of paid links, natural links, article submission links and directory links is the best way to go for long term growth.

When Kyle and I made the homepage of Digg with our cool little Dummies Generator, we ended up getting literally hundreds of new one way backlinks within a 2 week period.

It sounded cool until about a month later when all of our top ranking pages completely fell out of the SERPS. Luckily as the links age, we have started to rebound.

But I would be careful about adding too many new links in a short period of time. You will get penalized.

I thought so, the way I am doing it even with teh paid is buying one way links with various PR from 2-4 and the very odd 5. Right now I am adding anywhere from 10-20 per week and wasnt sure if that is to much or not.

My next question is will this penalty only happen to one page in particular or sitewide? Can I add say 15 links one week to my home page 3-4 to the internal pages and so on as long as the links are natural looking?

It really depends on quite a few factors. The age of your site (length of time indexed), how big your site is, how many current links do you have, and so on...

I would say that link amount is fine if your site has some age to it, a decent amount of pages, has been through multiple updates, and already quite a few links pointing to it. It is also a great idea, and better for SEO, to build in different type of exchanges like what Justin talked about. But it's really hard to tell, just my two cents...

Jeremy, I hope your site works it's way back up. I was actually a little curious about that happening when you originally posted about the whole Digg thing.
