Getting on the first page for "poker forum" would be valuable, even more so if you were in the top 5.
Being in the top 100 however isn't going to give you any value. I actually have a site that is somewhere around page 5 or 6 in google for the term poker forum, and it only gets around 5 -10 hits a month for that term. There are around 4900-5000 searches each month (according to overture keyword tool) for poker forum.
What percentage of those searchers actually make it to the 2nd page, not too mention past that.
I am not as savvy as some of my SEO mentors but I do know if you focus on the fundamentals, the rest will fall into place.
Fundamentals = Quality Content, More Quality Content, and good backlinks with proper anchor text from other quality sites.
Randy brings up a good point about links that many new people to SEO don't think about. I would take 1 link from an authority site or on a similar page from a site that ranks well for my specific term than hundreds of random links from various sites.
For example, and this would never happen. If tightpoker gave you a link on their party poker bonus code page for one of your party poker keywords you were going for, you would probably move up in the SERPS much higher from this one link versus 400 directory and random
blog links.
