Default Translated Site Question

What would be better for a site's translated version to have as an address.

www.sitename.com/de

or

www.de.sitename.com

Thanks,
Haynesey

I see all the big sites using www.de.sitename.com, so I'd imagine that's best.

Just speculating though...

Been thinking about the same thing myself lately?

I pretty sure the www.de.sitename isn't valid, it would be htp p://de.sitename.com

www. is a sub-directory like any other, ie. your de. above.

I've been waiting until I really get into the nuts & bolts of my localized versions to decide?
Still figuring out how to have the content change, along with the site language template. I see some hackin' ahead

I've noticed a few lately that are using the sub method ie. de.sitename.com & they're not doing as well as they should be IMO, so...

Anyone else have any hard evidence, one way or another?

go with the subdomain and put links from each location on the english (or main) version to its corresponding translated version on the "subdomain site"

Actually the best option wasn't mentioned above. sitename.de would be the best option, if you can get it.

I have a domain www.sitename.net, which is PR2, but the subdomain www.sitename.net/de is still zero PR, although it has the keywords, regularly added content and all. So when I buy a text link add, should I add the subdomain in the text, or the "root" domain?
But generally, I think getting the .de domain would be better I guess. What about Joomla / Joomfish ? Does Google go to the language sub-domains , and does it evaluate the different language "sections" in a different way ?

www.sitename.net/de isn't a subdomain. It's just a page on your website. The only thing that page needs in order to get PR is a link from one of the other pages on your website. (Or multiple pages on your website.) Most people already do that, so you've got nothing to worry about really.
