Directing links to your homepage or elsewhere?

I'm just wondering what other people's thoughts are regarding whether link exchanges should be directed to your homepage, or elsewhere .

I understand that linking to sub pages will help with those pages rank for the necessary keywords, but if a large number of links are going to be directed to your site, is it best to direct those links to your homepage ... and if so, will the increase in rankings that your homepage will (hopefully achieve!) 'seep down' to your sub pages?

You are correct.

I would exchange 75% of the time to the home page, 25% to important inner pages.

That's a good mix. You can't do 100% front page. Well you can, especially when you start out with a new site. Once you hit PR 2 on the home page, you want to start intergrating internal page links but still continue buildign links to your homepage.

You want "good" links pointing to your site and yes the majority of them aimed at your homepage. I dont base it on a ratio but I am now keeping tabs on things a little more closely. I choose a few main keywords I want to target for each page and I am now using an excel sheet to balance out my keywords that I have used, the anchor, page etc. Very easily you can off balance the links to your pages.

The strength from your homepage will be passed onto your internal pages. Thats why I hate linking from my homepage unless its to someone that I really really like or if they have helped me out. Make sure you have good navigation and internal linking.

I would also say you dont need PR to start adding links to your internal pages. I have a one page site..sorry its two pages including the sitemap which is a PR2...it has all of 2 links pointing to it.

I have never waited a certain time frame to add links to any page. Just keep it natural and you'll be alright
