Default Advice needed on avoiding duplicate content

I bought a new domain a few days back, and I've decided to throw up a bit of content up on it quickly, until I can get some time to develop the domain properly.

So I've used a free template. You can see the site at Best Poker Bonus (there's only one page up there atm ... like I say, I just wanted to get some kind of content up)

Anyway, the reason of giving you the link was to look at the tabs half way down the page.

Basically when someone clicks on one those tabs, the whole page is going to stay the same with the exception of the 5 rooms listed underneath that tab. But what's the best way of doing this without getting done for duplicate content by Google?

I obviously can't have 5 different versions of the index page. I thought of using a header variable like index.php?rooms=tournament ... but I thought I'd ask whether anyone has any other ideas that might be better suited to SEO.

Thanks alot for your help!

EDIT: I think I misinterpreted your post sorry. But anyway, with those tab things, I think people use java or something to flick between them. So instead of having 4 different pages, the java or whatever allows you to move between them whilst on the same page. You want something like pokerlistings has on the homepage right? EDIT

Unless I have missed something, this isn't a duplicate content issue at all.

Every time you click a link, you are just taken back to the top of the same page, not onto a new one. Its just like with some sites with long pages will have links at the top of an article that will automatically move you further down the page to a certain segment. The link simply moves you around the page.

I am sure that you have come across pages that have links in the content somewhere that say 'back to top' - this is just what your links are doing when you link to '#'.

So I wouldn't worry about a duplicate content issue here. Although, the fact that you only have one page up will mean that Google won't be valueing it too highly yet. I'm not sure what is best to do when you're kinda just parking a site to let Google know it's there, so I am sure someone else will be able to help you out on that.

Are you going to link those tabs to pages, or will they stay linked to the anchor as they are?

That's the question. I'm wondering what the best way to go about things is?

My initital reaction is to link things to the general page by linking things through a PHP link (ie using a question mark such as index.php?site=tournament), but I'm not sure if that is the best way ...

I would change all of the content on the page for each tab and have each tab essentially be a new page, with a unique url. Shouldn't be too hard to write a couple hundred words of new copy at the top of each new page, plus title and seo stuff...

link to an anchored position on the appropriate page from the tabs.

other than that, I'm sure there are some cool php scripts that could do what you're wanting to do and essentially have a dynamic area on your home page but i'm not the guy to ask that.
