You can alwas you an online spell check if you have just a small number of pages, and I think there are softwares out there that will allow you to spell check a massive amount of pages, same thing goes for the grammar errors.

People who search make typing and spelling errors in their search terms and it can be a technique to catch that search traffic.
I manage a site that we made a spelling error for a poker room, just going way to fast putting it together. But we get a bit a traffic from this word and i admit i am not the best spellher (lol just kidding) so it was totally by mistake and not done intentionally.

Interestingly enough the missed typed word(s) traffic is mostly international traffic so go figure.

So a few mis-spelled words might not hurt but it might even drive a little traffic your way if its the right words.

Spelling would definitely make lots of difference in the optimization... The search given by many people will not be wrong spelling. If they have to search for home business the key word used will be "home business" and very rare case of "hmoe bsuines", if you have the later as the key word for your website then the search results will not have your website...
Similar with grammar...

So its better to maintain grammar as well as spellings in your website for search engine optimization...

I ranked number one for the story about when Chip Reese died and a bit of inforamtion about him. The hits were flying in and conversions were also well up.

I was over the moon that one of my smaller sites could rank number 1 in google for the search term, I then noticed i had put Reece insteads of Reese.

I guess spelling can sometimes be a good thing, as i'm not the only poker player who is under educated, not that i was wanting to cash in on someones death, just the way it happened.

I always blush a little when I rank for a typo or worse, a mispell, then I create a new page.

I always try to keep my sites as mistake free as possible. However, like some of you mentioned, when one of my sites rank well for a specific keyword, I'll include that same keyword with different typos on some pages (scarcely, so it doesn't annoy the visitors).

For example, I have a site that ranks first for a popular pro athlete, but he's Russian and his name is hard to spell, so I also get a fair amount of traffic for the misspelled versions of his name as well...
