RSS for SEO

Hey,

When most internet marketers think of RSS, their first thought is syndication and driving traffic.

Fewer know that RSS is a great way to generate backlinks and that it can be used as a killer SEO tool.

Now I'm no expert in RSS, but recently I've been experimenting with it and getting backlinks for free.

I've submitted my RSS feeds to various directories. My questions below:

Do any of you have any SEO tips for RSS feeds ?
Which directories do you submit them to ?
Do you optimize you RSS feeds ?
Do you show just post excerpts or the entire posts ? Do you use XML for them ?

Here are some directories you can submit to right away (you're welcome)

rss2.com (dofollow)
feedraider.com (dofollow)
friendfeed (no follow but ranks very well).
feedage (dofollow - best of the bunch)

The problem with directory submissions is that the actual SEO value of the links is, well, next to nothing... regardless of whether or not it's an RSS directory or just your plain, old web directory.

Should you stray away from it entirely? No, I guess it can't hurt.. but don't expect directories to notably help you.

Hey,

What's nice about submitting them is that as soon as you post, you get instant backlinks from your feeds.

Some RSS directories like feedage also have good PR which make these good links.

Don't forget that these rss directories also alow you to rank. So you may get double listing. I've often seen rss2.com feeds rank number 1 or 2 for the title of one of your blog posts (friendfeed too).

Seems pretty darn powerful to me. Getting 10 free backlinks every time you post (dofollow if you are careful) all with the title of your wordpress post for the anchor text is pretty nice.
