Default How Come You Dont Nofollow?

I know why some of you don't use rel="nofollow" tags, and I'm hoping you'll hear me out and then maybe help me out if I am missing something here.

The main reason that people don't use these tags from what I understand is that people don't want trouble keeping their pages indexed. Some people also think this is a black-hat activity meant to cheat in the serps.

With regards to indexing, I will point out 2 things...you should probably have at least an XML sitemap if not an HTML for users as well. This won't guarantee indexing, but it will go a long way in helping to keep pages indexed.

I'll also point out that in an interview with Matt Cutts, he states that if you don't want a page indexed, simply not linking to that page will not be sufficient. The reason for this is that if someone is on that page, and they click on a link to leave that page, google will see them on the other side, see where they came from, follow their path backwards, and index that page where they came from. So if your site is getting trafficked well, you shouldn't have any problems with this.

I guess you could say that there is a small amount of risk associated with using nofollow tags. You could certainly make the argument that those pages won't get crawled as often, because there won't be as many ways for the bots to get there (although at this point I'm pretty sure that bots do follow these links still, but this is well argued about in other threads here). But any site with a decent amount of traffic should have no problems keeping their pages indexed in my opinion.

As far as this being a black-hat activity, I read another interview with Matt where he states pretty plainly that it is ok to use nofollow on your internal links with the purpose of channeling pagerank.

In looking at some of the sites that are doing the best in the poker world, it looks like many of them are not using nofollow tags.

So please...am I missing something here? How come some of you with great sites don't use nofollow on links to things like your contact page and other unimportant pages?

Is this something for young guns and crazy kids with nothing to lose?

I don't think that my "contact us" page is unimportant. In fact, I don't think any of the pages on my website are unimportant, and that's why I don't use "nofollow" on links to my internal pages. I've never seen any good reason to bother with using "nofollow" on links to my internal pages.

Your contact page has good content, maybe I should think about that.

If you type in "my domain contact" or anything similar, my homepage comes up, which seems fine to me. Anyone that wants to contact me bad enough that they google search for my email will be able to find me just fine. I'd rather send that link juice to my landing pages.

Is there anyone here who has in interest in their privacy statement ranking well in the serps? why not send that link juice to something that you want to rank well?

I'm not convinced that using nofollow conserves link juice.

It sounds like you saying that Pagerank or Link Juice does not have a finite quantity that has to be distributed? In other words, you are saying that when it is blocked from going somewhere it doesn't just flow elsewhere. Everything else still gets the same juice they would have. I guess I'm just not a big fan of using the word conserve when it comes to this, because im sure we are in agreement that nofollow does prevent link juice from leaving your site and going to other people through those links.

Maybe not, I think nofollow links are worth more than people think. In the future I think this will become true even more so...since no spammers are going out trying to get 1K nofollow links, a high percentage of the sites with lots of nofollow links pointing to them are going to be legitimate sites.

In a few years, the # of nofollow links pointing to a site will become a more accurate measure of a site's importance in my opinion.

I’ve never seen any evidence that PageRank sculpting led to a significant increase in search engine traffic or rankings. I have tried it on some of my sites too without significant results. A couple days ago Google published an article about the Importance of Link Architecture where they say that "It’s not something we, as webmasters who also work at Google, would really spend time or energy on." They're basically saying that it's not worth the time to put nofollow on internal links.

But they also followed it up with this..."it's far more productive to work on keeping users happy with fresh and compelling content rather than to worry about PageRank sculpting."

It seems like they are just trying to convince people to keep adding good content which is what they usually seem to be doing.

Maybe PPP will chime in here because he's pretty good at ripping apart google's statements.

I don't see much point in trying to sculpt PageRank either. This is one instance where Google is right on the money. I don't put up pages on my site that I don't want found and/or ranking. If it's not worth sending PR to, it's not worth linking to or publishing in the first place.
