The Value of .edu Links

How valuable do you think links would be from a PR-O .edu page...like a student's personal webspace. This is of course providing that I can get the page indexed so the links are found. To be clear, I'm talking about personal webspace, but it is visible to the public.

I was thinking about putting a few pages of "about me" stuff on a personal .edu page. They would never be too strong, but the content could be somewhat relevant.

Is there much value in this?

I actually just did this myself, as we have a personal webspace account at school. The page isn't indexed yet so I haven't seen any results from it, but it can't hurt.

I don't think a student's personal webpage on a .edu carries any more weight than any other link, unless that student's webpage has some strong links pointing toward it. Just being on a .edu doesn't by itself grant some kind of authority or power that a link wouldn't otherwise have.

Good answer, right to the heart of my question.

So this idea that .edu links are so valuable...is really just derived because most colleges have PR-7 and PR-8 and they don't really link to spammy sites. So naturally, most .edu links are very powerful.

Links are generally valuable in direct proportion to how hard they are to get. Links from comment spam in blogs are easy to get and therefore hold little value. Links from massive link exchange campaigns are a little harder to get and hold a little more value. A link from an article by a professor's homepage at a university would hold quite a bit of value.
