Default Link swap placement advice

Hi All -

I know im gonna come off real stupid here but to be honest I dont have a clue what Im doing when it comes to SEO.

I have had many people request link swaps with me and vice versa. My question is where do I place the links im given and where do I ask that my links be placed? Is the home page the standard spot?

Any advice would be great!

Thanks

The homepage is not the standard spot. It's customary for a lot of sites to have a page of "recommended sites" or "related sites" where they link out to other sites. Some sites link out to other sites from content pages, based on the specific content. For example, if you have a page about "Texas holdem strategy", it would be useful for visitors to have a section at the end of the article (or a sidebar) with "More Texas holdem strategy on the Internet" pointing toward some more good resources.

I saw your post over at CAP too. If you're looking for some introductory basics about SEO and linkbuilding, I can recommend a couple of articles to read:

Well if you've ever seen these Indian sites which only exist as patsies for triangular home page exchanges then you might not agree Actually the home page stuff is a lot better since you've got more to give and thus can get more back. Other than buying links if you want PR back you've got to give it and very few sites indeed have PR in links pages. However this doesn't mean that the no PR for no PR swaps aren't valuable, they are, but it's due to the sheer number of them that you can do. No page has zero PR, it's just below 0.50, and perhaps very below, but every link has some juice behind it. So while you'll be able to squeeze a few good home page swaps in there, you don't want to pollute your home page too much and you want to have most of your links in a directory of sorts.
