New member has SEO questions

Ok so I'm new to the game and trying to set things up right. Someone has been helping me some (Im his sub) but Im running into many difficulties.

1) Im shooting for phrases like "ucla poker" and "los angeles poker" for my targets. When I first submitted to the search engines, I got a #5 ranking on yahoo for "ucla poker". However, within a week I dropped right off the map and cant even find it now. I am still #1 for "ucla poker players" but am not seeing any results at all for my other keywords. Is there something I should do about my metatags? Or is there another route I should be taking?

2) I've had zero luck with google at all, and was wondering what to do in order to be successful there.

Start reading at some of the SEO forums and blogs on the internet and consider getting an ebook on SEO. Aaron Wall's book is particularly good. Metatags don't make much difference, so my guess is that you're needing to start at a pretty basic level, which might be beyond what you can reasonably expect by asking in this forum.

Although if you do a search, I think there have been some pretty good posts about SEO from me and from Dave here too.
