How do SE's determine what your keywords are for a page?

One answer is, they don't, you do.

Any words on the page are you "keywords". The most likely thing a page will rank for though is what you link to it with. For example look at the Jeremy's Articles link at the left

Well, they do actually. The anchor text in your inbound links tells them a lot about what your site is about. Read about Google bomb too.
Regarding meta tags - I don't think they matter anymore. However I'm sure that the tags do matter A LOT and the words in your domain name are important as well.

Yes, but its unlikely many folks here will get Googlebombed for something. The likelihood is the vast majority of links to all a sites pages, except the main page, will be directly under the site owner's control, which means your key ranking factor is whatever anchor text you decide to use.

I didn't mention Google bomb because I thought someone may be penalized, but to show how important an anchor text is for the SEs.

There are probally's 100 of factors that determine your rankings .

Each search engine has a different set of rules and formula they go by.

They range from , heading tags, backlinks, outgoing links, incoming links, coding/design.

Build your site with high quality content and se's will reconize this and send you traffic.

Inbound link text: 10 points.
title: 10 points
domain name: 7 points
large h1-h2 headings: 5 points
first sentence of first paragraph 5 points
path or filename: 4 points
proximity (multi kws): 4
beginning of a sentence 1.5 points
bold or italic text: 1 points
usage in text: 1 point
title attribute: 1 point
alt tag: .5 point
meta descrip: .5 points
meta keywords: .05 point

There were some disagreements from other forum participants (specifically around the meta component) but it seemed to have general agreement.
