I see some people talking about it. I have no clue what it is.

DMOZ used to be the most important directory of them all. The main reason was that the SEs were giving some extra credit to the sites listed in DMOZ, as they were supposed to be quality sites.

Recently however, the criteria that DMOZ editors were using to accept or not accept a site became somewhat blurred and DMOZ lost its reputatuon - that's why today the SEs treat DMOZ just as any other directory.

But there is still one very good reason to be listed in the DMOZ - there hundreds of its clones worldwide so when you get listed in the main directory, your link will appear in all these clone-directories and that of course means more inbound links to your site. I believe Google is doing something to prevent webmasters from getting extra link power from DMOZ clones but I don't know if they introduced any successfull filter already.

Ozim, I have been told exactly the opposite about some of these things. Would you mind leading me to the source of the information that says a DMOZ link isn't any more valuable than a regular directory link?

Thanks

Pokermonger, I'm not sure if you understood me correctly - I have said that G doesn't value DMOZ more than other directories anymore. As far as I know, the guys at Google had an ambition few years ago to make DMOZ kind of their official directory - they wanted to have their own directory just as Yahoo had theirs. DMOZ was supposed to be independent and uncommercial and therefore a very reliable source of information for G's SE.

But the idea failed as the DMOZ editors (anonymous people from all over the word) started to use unclear acceptance criteria for different sites. The editors knew how important a DMOZ entry was and what power that gave them. In fact, there have been cases that people aplied for the DMOZ editor just to add their sites and their friends sites while at the same time to ban competitors sites(*). So DMOZ lost its reputation and Google adjusted their SE algo accordingly. The source of this information - well, as always - forums, forums, discussions, forums... In the SEO world you never know these things for sure, you may just listen to what majority is saying. In other words, I'm not 100% sure about it, I'm just 80% sure <_<

On the other hand I have said, that DMOZ entry gives your site a lot more inbound link power than any other directory. But the reason for that is not that DMOZ is so cool but the fact that there are so many clones of it. But G knows that and will try to prevent the sites from getting 'duplicate DMOZ power'.

* - my site was not accepted too. The editor told me I have too many affiliate links and not enough original content. Actually I think that I have the best content, at least in the polish market, while at the same time I saw sites in the DMOZ that contained of affiliates links only...

Google still uses DMOZ as the source for its directory listings.

Yep, what I'm trying to say is that Google doesn't give any extra link power to the sites in this directory anymore. I'm just talking about how G's algo reacts on the sites in the DMOZ - today, normally, few years ago, by giving extra value.

"you may just listen to what majority is saying"

No way Jose. The majority, especially the majority who post, have no idea whatsoever what they are doing. Read the larger webmaster forums. For every right on post by a member who has been around for years, you have literally a hundred of tin hat posts from "new members" with under twenty posts.

When it comes to non-obvious concepts, the majority is almost always wrong.
