there was 4 million sites competing for the keyword, the number of sites returned when you typed the keyword in!

1. It would be easier to answer your question if you could tell us what the phrase is...

2. If your site is new then it is pretty usual (altough strange) Google behaviour. New sites move to the top of the rankings quite easily, especially when you start doing some heavy linking. But then Google moves your site back to 'its proper position' or 'way below its proper position' in case Sandbox kicks in. There is nothing you can do about it, just keep building your site, keep adding links and... wait. You definitely can go back to 1st page but it will happen later rather than sooner (it very much depends on the competitvness of your search phrase).

thank you for the insight, the keyword was bonus codes, i just thought it was starnge, this is my first site i have built and was under the impression once you got to the top you would stay there, however after 3 days of non stop reading about google i understand now that it doesnt work that way, i did slack off on my linking, i guess for now ill concentrate on the other search engines and let google take its course. once again thank you.

That up/down/up/down effect is normal in my experience for new sites.

Keep at it & with some age, it will start sticking.

cheers

From my experience google "tests" your site on the first page at strange intervals... I've been number 1 for many keywords for a week, but now I cant find myself in the top 500.

Alot of times when you have a new website you get temporary listings. It would be great to be ranked at the highest spots forever but it just doesnt work that way.

Keep building and google will send you traffic
