For those of you that don't follow SEO news very closely, this is an interesting story. Recently webmasterworld.com voluntarily had all their listing "un-indexed" from all of the major SE's by not allowing itself to get spidered. The amount of SE traffic that WMW receives is probably incomprehensible to most of us. B)

Interestingly enough most of us would kill for more traffic and WMW is trying to get rid of it. There are many different thoughts on what has transpired here and if Brett was smart or not to cut off all his SE traffic. Obviously he is not a start up and will continue to thrive without any SE traffic at all. I read somewhere that less than 15% of his actual traffic comes from SE's. But nonetheless it is an interesting story.

I don't know enough about the entire story to give an opinion either way but I'm sure some of you SEO geeks do. This should be an interesting thread to say the least. B)

I've never thought much of the place, a lot of the blind leading the blind IMO.
Always starting some Mac vs PC or PHP vs ASP thread to heat people up & get'em posting etc.
This stunt is basically the same thing IMO, to grab some attention & traffic.

New webmasters may pick up a few things there, but for anyone experienced they're a bunch of clowns!

I dont understand the point. An seo forum cuts off their seo traffic? Its like an oxy moron or something. I must be missing something.

He has his own reasons..... he's getting absolutely mullered by rogue bots... so he delisted himself from google, and disallowed all bots onto the site via robots.txt. I suppose if you can survive, and some annoying form of spam is costing you a fortune in bandwidth costs, it's well worth ditching the search engines.

Looks like hes going mandatory registration to view threads & pitchin the donations really hard?
All the spiders are going to get blocked anyway doin that, plus rogue bots don't obey the robots.txt. Thats why they call them "rogue bots" lol

I have a bit of bad history there too...

Years back, I posted a link to a resource page of mine for a guy that was asking exactly what my page answered, plus gave a visual reference. It was just a page, no branding of my dev site whatsoever.
They deleted the link & got their panties all in a bunch, emailed me some BS reasoning about their valuable traffic... yadda yadda yadda.
Of course they didn't take the time to answer the guys question after deleting mine lol

I just slapped the offending page back up... http://tejasmedia.com/font-size/

All the good dev sites are a lot like this poker gig, they're all niche!
The ones that do really know their stuff on the big sites, ain't tellin' h34r:

Have a problem & need an answer? Google it!

Start reading sites like http://alistapart.com/ & following links from there.

Need a reason why you should read sites like ALA?
Feast your eyes!... http://csszengarden.com/
Every site on there is the exact same .html only with different .css stylesheets.

Now thats the schnizzledizzlewizzle B)

cheers

I've always liked WebmasterWorld, and I felt like the money I spent to be part of the private forums there was money well-spent. It's like any other forum though; you have to pick and choose the good stuff.

Another good forum is Threadwatch, which just got bought by Aaron Wall today or yesterday. I'll be interested to see what Aaron does with the place.
