Lots of people ask about search engine rankings and how to rank high on their keywords.

This is a simple guide that will layout what you need to do to get your rankings.

Some of the other seo players are more than welcome to add info! to this ongoing article.

Questions are welcomed but please ask them in this thread so we get a good SEO article for all the new affiliates

Mission 1:

Selection of keyword/phrase....

Please don't go for keywords such as poker or online poker as the competetion is die hard! Instead go for niche keywords and go for lots or niche keywords.

For this article I checked out overture.com for keyword phrases and decieded to go for:

online poker tournament

Reason behind it gets several thounsan' searches a month and even thou there are over 2 million pages listed in google most of the top phrases are not optimized keyphrases but has their rankings because they have been going for other keywords.

sure it is a tough keyword to conquer but also a real moneymaker.

For a new SEO player I would suggest a keyphrase such as "betting online poker" A little easier but still has good potential.

Mission 2:

Get other websites to link to you. You will need to have pagerank3+ domains to link to you so you can get a pagerank yourself and really start to do link exchanges.

Mission 3: Have at least 4-5 articles and a total of minimum 10 pages for starters on your domain. All links should link to each other so you can reach all pages with just one click.

You will need to locate pagerank3 and above domains and have them link to you with text links with your keywords in them.

So if your keyword is online poker tournament

link text: Online Poker Tournament (this texk link should link to your site)
Description: The best online poker tournament. Win your seat to the WSOP!

This is what your link partners will have to use when they link to you. In exhnage they would want you to link to them.

Repeat above until you have at least several hundred links pointing to you with the information.

Now when you start to have many links it is very good to have another domain. So when you get a link exchange going you link from domain a to them and they link to your domain b.

This is a way to secure yourself from interlinking penalities... notsomething that happens often but it can happen if you link to 500 pages and they all link back.

This is in short what you will need to do for starters.

Then comes update of content, new articles reguarly etc. but that is something you just have to think about when you are finally starting to see results.

Above strategy still works for me!

P.S Remember to have your keyword in your title. Have the keyword repeated from time to time in the text on your website. Also remember to have a few h2 headlines (big text headlines) with your keyword in them.

Could you explain to me exactly what page ranks are and how you can define them by a number?

I have a general idea but don't quite understand how that works.

Pagerank.

Download the googletoolbar and see the pagerank of the website you are going to do an link exchange with (green bar shows if it is 0-10)

Are there other methods to get links besides link exchange? I find it tedious and boring. What about writing some articles and submitting them to other webmasters? If they publish it, you get a link back in the resource box.

Btw, if you ware targetting a certian phrase, should you deep link to the page or just have all links point to your homepage?

you will need links or you will have no chance to get in top10.

sure from time to time you can get obsure rankings on crazy keywords... or a press release can rank high (but only because sites are linkin to it)

What do you mean when you start to have many links, meaning that you are linking to a number of different sites, or that a number of different sites are linking to you (or both)?

Also there are advantages to having sites link to your 'main domain' but then linking to them from a different domain of yours or??

if all the links you link to link back in a big scale you can get penality for trying to play the SEO game...

so what some of us do is have more website create two pr3 and pr4 domains we then link from domain A and they link to domain B.

Good advice Ex. I have a situation with the SE's that I will share with you. I have a new site that MSN and similar SE's love. I rank in the top ten in almost every category pertaining to my site. Problem is Google barely knows I have a site! I have encountered this problem with other sites in the past and the following worked pretty well. As Ex Croupier suggested having your pages link together is important, but for maximum results you will need all the pages on your site to work together. I accomplished this in the past by using meta tags. By including meta tags that all work in harmony on each of your site's pages (the more pages the better) Google seems to find the site more relevant to the categories.

I have just begun to correct this problem with my new site, I'll let you know the results. In the meantime I would love to hear opinions on my idea.
