Default Multiple I.P.'s - How Important?

A question for the SEO guru's. How important is it to have all your sites on different I.P.'s if your linking from one another. For exampe if your on a a few dedicated servers and paying a several hundo a month, it would make sense to that you would have more than one site hosted on both.

Just wondering how important this really is in the big scheme of things. I realize that it is not optimal and most of your links should be from good link exchanges. But I am wondering how much benefit this actually has, lets say if all your sites are non authority sites with moderate PR (1-4)

Its better than having them all on one server. Easy to distinguish ownership.

I have been wondering the same things. For example, I have site A hosted on Host "A" and sites B and C on Host B. If B and C are linking to each other, will it have a negative impact? Will it be neutral? Would I recieve any benefit at all?

All depends on how many sites. I don't think it's a problem to cross link a few sites that are on the same IP. But I would do it for hundreds of sites. Anyway, different IPs is always better.

I've just been informed that you can assign different IPs to sites on a single server within the admin panel. Anybody with a dedicated or single server, and not shared hosting, should look into this as it will help SEO.

hyacinthgirl - linking between two sites on the same IP will have a positive effect although slightly less positive than if the sites were on different IP. The effects on hosting sites on the same IP will be more visible if you have not two, but let's say ten sites and you are cross-linking between them - Google will easily find out that they are part of the same network (even if you try to fool it doing three, four way exchanges or other tricks) and will decrease the value of these links - however the overall effect will still be positive, there is no need to be afraid of bans and filters.

Having a dedicated server or not makes no difference. If your on shared hosting you can still have a unique IP for each one of your sites for a nominal monthly charge from most hosting companies. However, they will still be on the same class c block which devalues your links a tad.

ty, that's good to know i have been worried about "hurting" new sites if i put them on the same hosting to start out.

You're right, I've never had a dedicated server myself. I'm assuming, which I shouldn't be, that the default IP for websites on a dedicated server are all the same. With this in mind, I was suggesting that it may be possible to get a dedicated server, change the IP of each website, and have the same positive effect as it would be to have your websites on shared hosting accounts. I definately understand that you can have a unique IP for each site on shared hosting, but just wasn't sure about if you could on a dedicated server.

ozim, sounds like you're dead on the money with that theory, nice post!
