I posted this at my affiliate site, but I will share it here.
I see alot of new affiliates here, registering a domain, putting up a website and just waiting for google to index the site and visitors will just flood. The first choice for most webmasters is the name of the site, and therefore the domain. Most people have a hard time finding a name that has a free domain, so they look for a while. Today most good poker .com is taken, and there is a reason. Natural typein is worth alot today, but also its important to have a domain that sounds trustworthy and is easy to remember. The shorter the better, preferably only two words word1word2.com ofcourse it can work with 3 words like pokeraffiliateworld.com but this site did also start with a 2 word .com and moved here. Preferably .com before any other domain extention after that .org then .net, cause thats what most people are used to. You will probably get most visitors from search engines and links, but a good domain is important to retain returning visitors and for word of mouth. Well good luck in your hunt for the perfect domain. |

Yes a good domain name is important, if I went to for example www.donkey.com and enjoyed the site and 1 day Im thinking what was that site again Im more likely to remember it than say the same site if it was www.donkeypoker-pleasurejyh-reunion.com without searching. Unless you have an absolute domain name like www.poker.com , or even www.po.com its unlikely that people will accidently just type in your url. Forget about any of these domains, they are all taken, have been for several years.
In my opinion .com is better for international sites. If I was only wanting traffic from canada or the UK for example then .ca or .co.uk would be equally as good as .com, or even better. .net is also good but most are gone now like .com. Domain names are also a lot about seo too. If you can get your hands on www.poker.gw or whatever then you can work on it to do well for you. All in all I would say you have to balance whats available/relevancy/seo, when choosing a domain name. I was watching a great documentry the other night about the guy who bought x:www.sex.com when the www came about. Sucks for him, but its different theese days as he has now found out |
